Using the guides

How to fill in a Chew On This guide on your phone

No printer needed. Every list, box and log in the guides is a form field you can tap and type in.

You don’t need a printer to use a Chew On This guide. Every tick box, blank line, food log and meal planner in them is a PDF form field. Tap it and the keyboard comes up.

The one thing that catches people out is where the typing gets saved. A PDF in a preview window isn’t open in an app, so anything you type into it goes when you close the tab. Here is the short version for each device.

How do I fill in a guide on an iPhone or iPad?

  1. Tap the guide link. It opens in a preview.
  2. Tap the share icon, then Save to Files, or Open in Books.
  3. Open the saved file from Files or Books and type into it. Your answers save as you go.

Books is the friendlier one for reading. Files is better if you want to email the guide to someone or bring it to a GP appointment.

How do I fill in a guide on an Android phone?

  1. Tap the link, then tap Download.
  2. Open the file from your notifications or from Drive.
  3. Type into the boxes, then use Save a copy if the app offers it.

If the built in viewer won’t let you type, Xodo and Acrobat Reader both handle form fields and both are free.

How do I fill in a guide on a computer?

In any browser, with one catch: press Save as or the download arrow before you close the tab, or the typing goes with it. Acrobat Reader, and Preview on a Mac, save as you type, which is safer for a log you will come back to over several days.

How do I keep a seven day log going?

The Seven Day Bloating Log has a line for each day, and the point is the pattern that shows up at the end of the week. Two habits help:

  • Save the file once, on the first day, and go back to that same saved copy each evening.
  • Fill it in at the same time each day, rather than trying to remember three days later.

If you would rather use paper for that one, it prints on A4 without cutting anything off. When the week is done, what to tell your GP about gut symptoms covers how to use it in an appointment, and a symptom log for your GP goes into what a GP wants to see in one.

Is what I type in a guide private?

Yes. What you type stays in the file on your own device. Nothing is sent to us and we cannot see any of it. If you bring a guide to an appointment, you are showing your own notes, which is what it is for.

Not sure which guide to start with? The which book quiz points you to one.

Questions people ask

Do I need to print the guides?

No. Every guide is a fillable PDF, so you can type straight into it on a phone, a tablet or a computer. Printing still works if you prefer paper.

Why did my answers disappear?

A browser preview does not keep what you type. Download or save the file first, then open the saved copy and type into that.

Which apps keep my answers?

Files and Books on iPhone, Drive or Xodo on Android, and Acrobat Reader or Preview on a computer. All of them save typing into a PDF form.

Can I fill one in more than once?

Yes. Save a second copy under a new name, for example Bloating log week two, and start again.
